Professor Georg Nemetschek

Company Founder

“We drive digitalization and innovation for the entire life cycle of the AEC industry!"

Professor Georg Nemetschek, born in 1934, is the founder and guiding spirit of Nemetschek Group.

In the late 1960s, anticipating change in the industry, he opted for software, played a personal role in major developments and still drives innovation with energy and action to this day, not only in the Group but also in the industry as a whole.

Early Fascination
When studying civil engineering at Munich Technical University, Prof. Nemetschek was already fascinated by PERM, a thermionic computer constructed by Professors Piloty and Sauer, which, along with Konrad Zuse’s Z1, represented a milestone in computer technology.

Software Vision
Prof. Nemetschek followed his passion for computers and software and dared to risk investing in software development in the sixties – at a time before the PC existed. The success proved him right: In 1963, the newly founded “Engineering office for the construction industry” was one of the first to use programs for the calculation of finite elements for plates subject to high loads with irregular support.

Training the Next Generation
In 1971, Prof. Nemetschek was given a professorship at Munich University of Applied Sciences. He served for many years as Dean of the Faculty for Civil Engineering/Steel Construction until 1996. He paid special attention to providing students with practical training. Through donations, he ensured that students always had access to the latest software and hardware.

Going Public
In 1997, Prof. Georg Nemetschek transformed Nemetschek Programmsysteme GmbH into a stock corporation. In March 1999, the company went public.

  • As a “visionary and successful entrepreneur in the development of information technology in the construction industry,” Professor Nemetschek is honored with the Konrad Zuse medal in 1997.
  • Prof. Nemetschek is awarded the “Bundesverdienstkreuz” (Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany) in 2001 in recognition of his unique lifetime achievements.
  • Prof. Nemetschek is honored with the Konrad Zuse plaque in 2013 for his contributions in the area of building software and his commitment to promotion of young talents.
  • In 2014, Prof. Nemetschek is included in the IT Hall of Fame of the “Computerwoche” journal.

Nemetschek Foundation
